The Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) has warned the public against the purchase and consumption of “So Nice Mackerel” because it cannot vouch for its wholesomeness.

The warning against the consumption of “So Nice Mackerel” came after the FDA destroyed 4,500 cartons of “Asahi Mackerel” on Wednesday.

The two unregistered products were imported into the country by Dotsisco Ventures and were subsequently impounded by the Mile 7 District Police following a tip-off by residents of Ofankor.

The Head of Communications at FDA, Mr James Lartey, said investigations conducted by the Police and the FDA revealed that Six-twenty-footer container of the products was imported into the country to be transited to Togo.

“We discovered that ‘So Nice mackerel’ and Asahi mackerel were shipped into the country by Dotsisco Ventures, but the documentation covering them indicated that they were on transit to Togo,” he said.

The products, he said, found its way into the Ghanaian market and were impounded by the Police upon a tip-off.

Mr Lartey further revealed that three-footer container of So Nice Mackerel was transported to Kumasi, Takoradi and Tamale, adding that 500 cartons of the product have been sized after a Post Market Surveillance in Kumasi.

“The owner of the product managed to transport ‘So Nice mackerel’ to Kumasi, Takoradi and Tamale,” he noted.

He added that the 500 cartons of seized So Nice Mackerel would be transported to Accra for a proper health check.
