A good Samaritan has risked his life to save a stranger's dog from a burning house just seconds before the roof collapsed.

Neighbors watched in horror as the home in White House, Tennessee went up in flames on Saturday afternoon - with pet Sampson still inside.

Suddenly a mystery man had pulled up in his Mustang and dashed inside the house as flames engulfed the roof. He returned a few minutes later carrying Sampson, an 80lb Bouvier breed, wrapped in a blanket.

Witnesses said that just 30 seconds after he exited the house, the roof had collapsed inwards.

But before anyone could thank him for saving the beloved pet, who was left with family friends, the man had got in his truck and disappeared.

The incredible moment was caught on camera by neighbor Jimmy Nichols, a keyboard player who has back up famous artists such as Faith Hill.

'This guy in a gray Mustang pulls up says, 'I do this for a living,' and he runs in and he comes out about two minutes later with this beautiful dog in his arms, and it was incredible to see,' said Nichols.

He said that the whole community were grateful to the good Samaritan.

Now the mystery man has revealed himself as Tim Tawater, a firefighter with the Nashville Fire Department.

Tawater, who also lives in White House, said he had been on the way to his daughter's birthday when he spotted the thick acrid smoke coming from the house fire.

Knowing that by the time volunteer firefighters got there it could be too late, the off-duty fireman jumped in his truck and drove to property to see if he could help.

Homeowners Brandon and April Gorley said they very grateful for the hero's brave actions.

'He didn't have to go into a house that was on fire,' Brandon Gorley said. 'Deeply, deeply appreciate him being there.'

But Tawater, a firefighter for more than 20 years, brushed aside suggestions that he went above and beyond the call of duty.

'The real heroes to me are the volunteers, because they don't get paid for it,' Tawater said. 'They do it for free.' 'I don't do it for people to say 'thank you.' I do it because it needs to be done.'

The blaze ripped through the family home on Maxi Jones Road, gutting the property and leaving little standing but the exterior shell. Three cats which were inside at the time have not been found.

The Gorleys said they left Sampson with a dog-sitter while they went out of town. The couple had just arrived at the Gulf Coast when they got the devastating news their house was on fire and returned immediately.

The sitter, a relative, had just left the house go to a nearby store when the fire broke out.

Fire investigators said they were not treating it as suspicious and believe it may have begun in the attic.
