Fashion week may have ended but high street stores have filled with the latest autumn and winter fashions, posing brand new style conundrums for shoppers keen to stay stylish but frankly confused by the latest trends.

Should women really discard cosy tights to fit in with the style crowd? When it comes to boots, should we be going for ankle height, knee or over-the-knee? And how should you wear pink when your wardrobe is dominated by black and grey?

Here, the brains by styling company Miss Dress - founder Clare Watson, her partner Bianca Faber and stylist Sarah Bartholomew - tell FEMAIL how every-day women can incorporate the hard-to-wear new pieces into their look.

BOOTS

One good thing about winter is the abundance of beautiful winter boots available. From high end to high street, ankle to thigh high, there really is a style and price point for everyone.

The trick is to pair heeled ankle boots with a skirt and tights, and knee or even thigh-high boots over super skinny jeans.

Millie Mackintosh braved the so-far balmy autumn weather by wearing her fringed black suede boots with a 1970s-inspired dress.

FAUX FUR

Faux fur is a great way to embrace winter, plus there is an age-appropriate style for everyone.

For a full-on look, choose a faux fur or shearling coat in a rich brown or black.

A faux fur gilet paired with a long sleeved top is a fab alternative to a jumper, and a faux fur scarf can be worn over last year's winter coat to refresh it.

Janelle Monae wore a faux fur cape with a mini skirt and boots, while Ferne McCann draped blush pink fur over a sparkly black dress.

St Vincent showed off her rocker credentials at the Chanel Mademoiselle Prive party on October 12 by teaming a shearling-style fur with her long lace dress.

But if you still think that is too much, try a fun pom-pom keyring attached to your bag.

Roll necks

Roll necks are a great way to stay cosy while still looking stylish.

Choose from a wealth of styles, such as a chunky knit with a fitted skirt or leather leggings, or a fitted classic black style, which can be worn under a dress to instantly make it winter appropriate.

Bella Hadid teamed her ribbed camel roll neck with a brown leather mini skirt - as well as bare legs. Singer Nina Nesbitt wrote her grey ribbed roll neck jumper with tight, tailored trousers and boots.

Cashmere or wool will stand the test of time – invest now and wear for years to come.

Seventies

The Seventies trend isn’t going anywhere and is an extremely versatile trend to incorporate into most people's wardrobes.

A poncho, suede skirt or boho blouse paired with items you may already own is an inexpensive way to tap into the trend.

We cannot talk about Seventies without mentioning flares - if you can step away from the skinnies they are a fabulous way to elongate the legs! Go for cropped for a trend-driven look.

Florence Welch has shown of exactly how to wear long dark denim flares with a kimono-style jacket and blouse this summer.

But for autumn and winter, pair dark denim flares with a chunky knit roll neck jumper.

Modern Goth

Fashion has taken a dark turn this winter and is embracing all things gothic, with the stars turning out to the launch of the Chanel Mademoiselle Prive exhibition in inky dresses, matching heels and even dark moody lipstick.

A black Victorian style blouse teamed with black skinny jeans and ankle boots is a trend-driven but wearable look.

Keep an eye out for high neck dresses with long sleeves in lace and mesh, and pair with berry lipstick if you are feeling brave.

Culottes and cropped trousers

Culottes may seem a bit scary however they are an extremely versatile item of clothing which we have successfully introduced lots of clients to.

They are a great alternative to trousers and are wearable in the winter if you choose a pair that are more structured in a heavier material - denim is a great choice.

They generally look best paired with heels; however for an on trend look pair with heeled ankle boots.

Just think of culottes as an alternative to a midi skirt and you're good to go.

Khaki

Khaki is a new neutral; it really does go with everything.

From khaki Army trousers (paired with a boho blouse and heels) to a fluid army jacket (over a little black dress) it is a great way to bring a touch of casual cool to your look.

Kylie Jenner isn't afraid of stepping out in an all khaki ensemble and was spotted in matching shirt, trousers, loose flowing sleeveless jacket and shoulder bag.

But if you don't want to go that far, key pieces are a khaki army jacket or silk shirt – pair these with a black leather pencil skirt and heels.

Think pink

A colour with a slightly bad rep; now is definitely the time to embrace pink! Pink was all over the catwalks - from pretty pastels to magenta, and can work in all situations.

While even Rihanna donned the blush shade on a recent trip to Paris.

If you aren’t overly girly, look for a slouchy cashmere jumper in a darker, rich hue, which would look great paired with dark denim cropped flares and a pink nail. Full marks for colour blocking!

Code red

Scarlet, Crimson, or ketchup – red is everywhere this winter. From deep berry to pillar box red, there is a shade to suit everyone.

A red coat will look chic over just about any outfit, and a roll neck jumper in your shade of choice will be versatile.

Go head to toe if you are feeling brave. And don’t forget the lipstick!

Check mate

Checks, in all shapes and sizes, are a key trend for this season.

Single items of houndstooth, plaid and tweed - such as blazers or kilts - are easy to wear on an everyday basis.

Pair with chunky leather ankle boots and one of your roll neck jumpers and you are good to go. Avoid a head to toe look unless you are going walking in the country.
