The moment a fire crew rescued a dog and his owner from a car trapped in swift floodwaters has been caught on video.

Rescuers in Florence, Colorado say the dog Petey and his owner became trapped in the potentially deadly situation when the man parked his car in a dry creek bed that became flooded.

A thunderstorm had hit the area earlier, causing a flash flood that turned the dry creek into a raging torrent.

In video shot by one of the rescuers, a ladder truck is seen extending its ladder out over the rushing water.

A rescuer at the end passes a life vest and safety lines into the trapped vehicle through the window.

The man attaches a rescue line to his dog Petey and passes the dog out of the window.

The rescuer grabs the dog and Petey kicks his legs to find a grip before bounding up into the rescuers arms.

The man in the car then struggles out of the window and carefully makes his way onto the ladder.

After the turntable ladder has been swung back over dry land, the rescuer, man, and dog make their way gingerly back to the ground.

The Florence Police Department, Fremont County Emergency Management, and the county Department of Transportation all assisted in the rescue, as did civilian bystanders.
