California has made a 66million-year-old duck-billed herbivore its state dinosaur, becoming the 11th state to have one.

Govenor Jerry Brown announced Saturday the signing of a bill making Augustynolophus (Aw-gus-tin-o-lo-fus) morrisi the official dinosaur of the Golden State.

Fossilized remains of the duck-billed creature that lived between 100million and 66million years ago were first discovered in 1939 and haven't been found outside California.

It took about 66 million years, but a duck-billed creature has finally won recognition as California's state dinosaur. Pictured: A sculpture of an Augustynolophus morrisi

The bill states that a state dinosaur 'is essential to California's society because it nurtures an educational opportunity for the youngest Californians to become interested in paleontology.'

It adds that the Augustynolophus is 'a unique dinosaur that has only been found in California.'

Scientists at California Institute of Technology discovered specimens of Augustynolophus in 1939 and 1940 in the Moreno Shale Formation in the Panoche Hills of Fresno County.

Several other states and Washington DC also have official dinosaurs.

California has more than 30 state insignia including a state lichen - lace lichen - and a state fabric, denim.
